The Duke of Edinburgh award scheme is a non-competitive programme of activities for anyone aged 14-25. It offers the participant an individual challenge and encourages them to undertake exciting, constructive, challenging and enjoyable activities. In taking part the individual will develop their self-confidence, independence, sense of responsibility, planning and time management skills and many other skills.
The D of E award is universally recognised.
The scheme is divided into four sections with three progressive levels Bronze, Silver and Gold. The four sections are:
Service – to encourage service to individuals and the community
Skill – to encourage the discovery and development of personal interests and social and practical skills
Physical Recreation – to encourage participation and improvement in physical activity
Expeditions – to encourage a spirit of adventure and discovery.
For gold level there is an additional requirement:
Residential project – to broaden experience through involvement with others in a residential setting.
All of these sections can be completed within the Air Cadet Organisation using the skills and knowledge that are obtained through normal development and training.
